‘Oman has so much to offer that it is hard to know where to begin.’ So starts the latest edition of the vibrant travel guide ‘101 Things To See & Do In Oman’, from Bahrain based ‘101 Guides Publicity & Advertising’, leading one into the magical world of Oman’s forts, deserts, mountains, seas and it’s legendary hospitality. As the book cover states: ‘From fabulous forts to desert adventures, prepare to fall under the Sultanate’s spell.’
Explaining further, he said, “It contains 101 places with 150 travel tips to help visitors make the most of their visit. Besides, each sightseeing place featured includes GPS code to help you reach the site easily; it also comes with a map of Oman. It is currently available at the Muscat International Airport and Bait Mattrah Gallery, in addition to a few other outlets.”
Published by Ali Hussain Mushaima, Managing Director of 101 Guides Publicity & Advertising, and written by established travel writer Sarah Clarke, it features images captured by a team of photographers, including award winning travel photographer James Davis. The team has woven a fascinating tapestry of travel destinations, picking popular as well as lesser-known natural attractions from all over the country. “It contains all the places of interests in Oman, with details on what to see and do in each province of Oman,” said Mushaima, in an email interview with FACES, pointing out that work on the updated edition began two years ago, with visits to all the different provinces of the country.
What makes the new edition (the first two editions were released in 2011 and 2012) all the more exciting is the spotlight on five special experiences that are incorporated to add an edge to any holiday/travel to Oman. With ‘experience travel’ gaining a strong foothold in the burgeoning global travel industry, the inclusion of five specific travel experiences – Stay with Bedouin, Rent a Motor Home, Yoga Tours, Fishing Adventure in Dhofar and Frankincense Experience – is a perfect start for travellers seeking novel experiences than sightseeing avenues. For Ali and his team, the last was the most special. “Of all the trips here, the most fascinating to me was the experience that we had collecting frankincense,” he added.
Throwing the spotlight on the elaborate process involved in identifying and short-listing the destinations, he said, “While we were working on the book, it was considerably difficult to stick to our agenda of 101 sites. The country is big and beautiful with lots of things to see and do… We tried to include a variety of important places, as the country has some of the most exciting places in the Arabian Gulf. It is safe and its friendly people are an asset for travellers coming to enjoy what it has to offer. Friendly locals that you meet on your trips are very welcoming – they invite you to their homes like an old friend. This is, indeed, a beautiful country; it is a safe destination for all kinds of travellers.”
The book, he adds, was thanks, in no small measure to the patrons who made it possible and the people who hosted the team during the course of the book. “Promoting Oman is, has, and will always be a subject close to my heart. We would love to hear feedback (email: awtours@batelco.com.bh) from our readers on the book,” says Mushaima, who has published six other books in the 101 series – Bahrain, Ireland, Istanbul, Chios Island (Greece), Scotland and Yemen. Besides, the Bahrain, Chios and Istanbul versions are available free as flip-books on www.explore101.com. Explore101 is the website companion to 101 Things to See & Do…, a series of pictorially rich travel guides. As the title suggests, the books highlight the must-see attractions for each destination.
Published by 101 Guides Publicity & Advertising in association with A Type of Magic, these pocket-sized guides feature original photography accompanied by short text commentary from a team of travel writers who make their picks after touring the region. The rich imagery makes the guide a valuable keepsake, something to leaf through and bring back memories long after the visit is complete.
