As the seasons change, we ache to give our homes a pretty revamp and new décor ideas. We’d love to change colour palettes, do away with older pieces that are worn out, and bring in some new décor ideas that are seasonal and on-trend. The only problem is, our bank accounts rattle at the thought of new décor!
Décor is generally expensive. And that’s why we tend to get stuck with one style or the same pieces for years together. However, if there is anything we have learned from the DIY craze online, it’s that you can refurbish existing pieces and polish them till they look as good as new, and create beautiful décor from things you would generally throw away! We bring you 3 such Upcycled DIY décor Ideas that will add oodles of style to your home…
Suitcase Side Tables
We’ve all got ancient suitcases lying around the house. Maybe they belonged to a close family member and are worth a lot of sentimental value. But, to just have it lying in the home, and taking up space is not a feasible option. So why not turn your old suitcase into a side table with storage?
For this DIY décor Idea you’ll need an unused suitcase, four hairpin legs of the length you desire, paint if you wish to paint the suitcase. Turn the suitcase over and on the four corners mark where you would like the legs to go. Then hold the legs steadily against the suitcase and screw them in using a drill. Once properly secure and sturdy, turn the suitcase table over, and paint the outsides in the shade you want. We suggest leaving the original colour on, but jazzing it up by painting the hardware, clamps and studs with gold metallic paint. Once it is dry, store light bedding or knick-knacks in the suitcase, close it and place it near a couch or a bed.
Repurposed T-shirt Pillow Covers
Switching out the covers of throw pillows is the easiest way to change things up in your home décor. So, why not use old t-shirts or sweaters that don’t fit into a easy DIY décor idea by turning them into throw pillow covers?
Place the t-shirt inside out flat on the ground and place the cushion on top of it. Trace the size of the cushion onto the t-shirt. Then, make a bigger square, adding 3 inches on each side. Cut along the lines of the bigger square. At this point, you could sew three sides of the squares and then turn it inside out. Or if you are not good with stitching, simply cut fringes along the edges of both squares and tie them together, securing them to each other in the process. Do this on three sides, then stuff the cover with the pillow and repeat tying the fringe on the fourth side.
Rope & Tire Ottoman
Ottomans and pouffes are such chic additions to a space and can really make a room feel cosy and warm. They are great solutions for extra seating, too. But they can be expensive, for the size they come in. We’ve got a cool DIY décor idea, though! Let’s create our own ottoman with thick burlap rope and an old tire.
You’re going to need four 3/4” tall circles of wood cut out the same size as the diameter of the tire, the tire, a lot of thick burlap rope, liquid nails (or any other heavy-duty adhesive), screws and a drill. Stick two wooden circles together with the liquids nail; repeat the same with the other two. Once dried, take one of the resulting wooden circles and place on the tire. Using a drill, screw long screws at 3-inch intervals along the edges of the wooden circle so as to secure it firmly to the tire. Then turn it over, and repeat the same with the remaining wooden circle and screws. Choose which side is to be the top, then smear with liquid nails, and starting from the centre of the wooden circle, create a tightly-wound spiral pattern with the burlap rope. Keep spreading the adhesive in sections and continue winding the rope until the top and the sides of the tire are covered. And voila, you have a beautiful, rustic-looking ottoman!
