The 90s Fashion Comeback

Get on the 90s fashion bandwagon to relive trends that are charming, eloquent and so very timeless, as Rachel Vera presents a snapshot of trends that are making a huge comeback

Fashion is fleeting; new styles are trending every few weeks on runways and old trends often make a comeback in designers’ collections. One cannot deny that revisiting these old trends and watching them rule the scene again every few years is both heartwarming, and for some, confusing.

If you’re a 90s kid like me, you probably grew up sporting flared jeans and ruffled tops that were deemed embarrassing and shunned in the early 00s. But if you have been watching the newest trends this summer, you won’t be blamed for wondering if we’re back in the 90s – for those flared jeans are back, and how.

Read on to see all the 90s trends that made a comeback this year:

Choker Neckpieces

Initially seen on Britney and other Disney stars in the nineties, the choker is probably the most popular trend to make a comeback. Designers have been experimenting with this accessory to create both ethnic and western designs, ensuring you can wear it with a variety of outfits.

I recommend pairing it with a tank top and a long flowy cape or shrug and a pair of snug jeans for the uber-chic look!

High Waist Jeans

Might I just tell you that I love love love this trend? These jeans are super flattering on ladies with small waists, they make your legs seem endless and break the monotony of a straight outfit to give dimension and structure to your look.

Pair these with a fitted blouse to help accentuate. Ladies, if you’re heavy around the midsection, you may want to reconsider wearing this trend.

Flared Jeans

There is something so retro about flared jeans. I mean, I’m pretty sure everyone has a picture of their moms wearing them during the 80s. Flared jeans aren’t exactly flattering on every body type (I wouldn’t wear them) – they look best on people with a slight frame. For the others, it just adds an illusion of mass at the base.

Flouncy, Ruffled Blouses

Ah! Here’s something for those who love ultra-feminine styles. Ruffles and blouses with sleeve detailing are back and winning. This style is super easy to wear and can be worn by everyone and their moms, a total favourite!

Fanny Packs

This one’s an interesting trend. Many bloggers today have been seen sporting this, so there’s no doubt that fanny packs are back (since Kendall Jenner was seen wearing one too). Love it or hate it, this one’s definitely useful as it can hold everything from your phone and makeup to everything in between.

Fishnet Stockings

The easy way to cover up and still show some skin, wear this one with high heels or booties or be experimental by pairing it with converse shows for some rocker chick glam.

Platform Sneakers

Isn’t it every woman’s dream to wear heels but without the blisters, sores and swollen feet uncomfortable stilettos leave you with? Hello Platform sneakers!

They’re cool enough to wear during the day and flashy enough for evening outs too. What’s more, they are super easy and comfortable to walk in and add inches to your height. Drawbacks? I don’t see them!
