Make a Fashion Statement with Your Man Bun

Have long hair and need a style to rock the festive season…? How about a neat man bun?

Long hair isn’t an easy style to sport in this part of the world where humidity stretches right through to winter months. But with little help from experts in the hair style business, you could find your style quotient with a simple man bun.

As the name suggests, man bun is, literally, a bun on the head to hold your long – even short – hair together. The bun gathers all the hair into a bun in a top knot or a ponytail that is then rounded off with a band. The size of the bun is dependent on the length of the hair you sport; however, you could manage to get a decent looking bun by simply pinching the ends into a band at the nape or as a top knot.

What makes man bun an eye grabbing style is the versatility it offers. It can be worn in any which way, presenting newer alternatives for men with varying hair lengths and textures. Here are a few to get you started… But, before that, learn the ropes of tying a man bun on short to long hair.

When the hair is still slightly damp, brush it all to the back of your head and bunch it up at one point. If you are accustomed to using hair cream, go on apply a coat before brushing the hair. Keep a hair band ready to tie your hair in place. Secure the hair in a tight grip so as to hold the hair in one place. Your idea should be to start with a ponytail which can then be wrapped into a bun using another band to give it the right shape. Once you learn the ropes of tying, you could loop the ends of the hair into the hair tie used to create a neat man bun.

Loose man bun

Whether the dress code is semi-formal or casual, it is best to sport your man bun in a loose style. It should give off a casual yet confident touch, as if you tied it up in a hurry. The idea is to make it look like one of those messy buns popularised by female celebrities. Just go with the flow and let the bun take on its comfortable avatar. This style is best for long hair as it provides an easy solution to managing your thick or even unruly hair.

Tight bun

If you have naturally silky hair that tends to come out in strands from the hair band, you need to practice to tighten your bun to keep all the hair in place. Comb the hair back, bringing every loose strand in. Hold it together with a hair band and secure the bun with a tighter band.

The undercut

This is a stylish cut that lets you wear your hair any which way you like. You could opt for a man bun with a fade cut or an undercut that features a uniform length. This style lets you wear your hair high, mid or low. The shorter sides help highlight the hair that is tied in a bun. With the undercut in place, you could manage a bun even if your hair is shorter. A mini man bun could be worked out with an elastic band. You could rock a man bun even if you have a high – or a low – fade haircut.

Half up man bun

Follow this style when you want a relaxed look. Here you have both – open hair as well as a man bun – to complement your casual persona. This half up, half down style requires you to part your hair in half horizontally, with the top half getting worked into a bun. The rest of the hair can fall naturally around your shoulders.

Formal man bun

In a corporate setup or for a formal evening do, you might feel compelled to make the man bun look more subtle to go with the dress code. Your best bet for a formal occasion is a man bun that is stuck at the nape. It will give you a more slick and polished look, one that would seem just right for the formal occasion.

Go on; rock your long locks in a stylish man bun…
