I have never been able to organise my wardrobe. If you open my wardrobe, you will find clothes still hanging on the hangers they came upon or half of them folded to be ironed just before I am going out. That clearly indicates that I am no Marie Kondo when it comes to tidying up. So, I looked up quick and easy ways to arrange or rather refresh my wardrobe; ways that do not involve preparing category tables for the organisation or take up an entire day. Here are the tips that helped me refresh my wardrobe, which I assure you will work to your benefit.
Get the unwanted stuff out of way: Now is the perfect time to stack away thick or woollen clothes, if any, that you had out for the cooler days. Before starting, wash all these clothes, fold them neatly and vacuum pack them to save storage. If you are storing away any clothes in a carton or suitcase that may be difficult to reach later then it is best to take a photograph of the contents on your phone before it gets packed away.
Get it all out and sort it: This could prove to be a tedious task but to arrange, first, get it all out. Get everything in your wardrobe out and pile it where everything is visible to your eyes and know what you own. Divide the items into piles of what you wear frequently and what you do not.
Refresh your wardrobe: Let us concentrate on the second pile which will contain clothes that you have not worn past six months, NO! I am not asking you to get rid of them. When you put these forgotten clothes beside the pile of clothes you love and wear all the time, you will discover that you seem to be wearing a similar type of clothing or attire repeatedly. This is when you rediscover the forgotten pieces and come up with ways to wear them again or mix and match them with other pieces. The goal here is to expand your wardrobe, rather than circling through the same few outfits. You will end up with ‘new’ outfits that you already own.
Categorise your clothes: Concentrating on the refreshed and wanted pile, you need to first categorise your items, which can either be based on the location where you place them in the wardrobe (on the rail or shelves) or by the type of clothing (dress, tops, or bottoms). If you choose the type category, then you must decide whether you will hang or fold that clothing item.
Arrange your items: Start by hanging the clothes that need a full-length hanging room at one end of the wardrobe rail, gradually decreasing lengths with the shorter clothes ending on the other side of the rail. You can utilise the space under the shorter clothes by placing baskets or boxes containing scarves, swimwear, or accessories. Do not arrange the clothes according to their colours as you will never start your day thinking what colour you will wear that day. Also, you will not be able to find what you want quickly when everything is arranged by colours.
Neatly folded stacks of clothes on the shelf look incredibly good to the eyes but you need to arrange clothes in a way that you can see as many items as possible, and you can pull something out without letting it tumble down. If you have drawers in your wardrobe, then use adjustable dividers to arrange smaller clothing or you can also use under shelf hanging baskets. You can also get a lazy Susan for clothes and accessories to avoid missing any items.
Dispose of unwanted stuff: Discard the irreparable items or the ones you do not fit into. You can either donate them or sell worthy items online.
I know it is not much, but I guarantee you that these organisation tips are enough to create more space in your wardrobe and more importantly refresh it to rediscover the forgotten items that you bought lovingly in the first place.
