Trapped water, green groves and rolling mountains… There is a picture-postcard feel to most wadis in Oman – from the rugged mountains bordering the horizon to the freshwater trembling to the moods of the breeze. Oman is blessed with more than its share of picture-perfect wadis, most of which are easily accessible and immensely popular as picnic spots, even camping destinations. Here is a quick list of some must-visit wadis here in Oman.
Wadi Damm
Located in the Al Dhahira region of Oman, Wadi Damm is about 45 kilometres away from the city of Ibri. Surrounded by rugged mountains and hilltops with a short 4WD section, Wadi Damm is one of the most beautiful wadis in Oman, and a perfect spot for hikers, water babies, and thrill-seekers. The journey to the wadi mostly extends on a tarmac road with a little bit of off-roading closer to the destination. For those who love challenges and hiking, this wadi is an adventure-seeking zone from its very beginning. A five to ten-minute walk over smooth rocks is the first step one must cross to get closer to the water, followed by a mini-hike through the rocks! Wadi Damm is a seasonal wadi, getting most of its water from the local rainfall. However, one might get to witness gorgeous still water throughout your exploration journey, and if you go closer to the rainy season then you might get to swim in these waters making your way through the rocks!
Wadi Bani Khalid
One of the Sultanates best-known wadis and a crowd favourite, this tourist destination is located 203km away from Muscat and 120km away from Sur. Wadi Bani Khalid has a constant stream of water all year round and its large water pools, the natural springs are a thrill to dive into and swim through. The wadi also has large boulders scattered throughout which makes it a great adventure zone for thrill-seekers. The wadi is also well developed with a seating area and restaurant making it a popular and convenient tourist spot. Although traditionally busy during the weekends, Wadi Bani Khalid, might lend you a quiet spot if you can make it during the weekdays. Whether you chose to admire the scenery, dive deep into the pools, or make your way through the magnificent boulders, Wadi Bani Khalid will take your breath away.
Wadi Al Shab
The bright turquoise blue waters of Wadi Al Shab and its picturesque mountains make it a great tourist destination to beat the summer heat, pump up your adrenaline, and have the time of your life. Wadi Al Shab is located in Al Sharqiyah South Governorate, in Tiwi. Located about 140km from Muscat, the journey to this wadi will have you witness the gorgeous Arabian Gulf and the rocky red mountains on either side of the road. The mountains at Wadi Al Shab, have gorgeous waterfalls where freshwater makes its way down the slopes to meet at sea. The wadi also offers a chance for boat rides as well as hiking. This wadi also features a 40-minute hike that will lead you to a cave filled with water where one can take a dip and relax. The larger pools in the wadi are highly popular with even the Cliff Diving World Championships having been held here in the past!
Wadi Al Arbiyeen
Furrowing the Al-Sharqiyah and Al-Hajar Mountains, Wadi Al Arbiyeen is located about 125 km from the Muscat governorate and is considered to be one of Oman’s most beautiful valleys. With deep pools and incredible hiking sites, this wadi is great for climbers and water lovers. The mountaineering scene at Wadi Al Arbiyeen is strong with different groups of mountaineers always on the go to enjoy the wadi’s delicate yet extensive views. Additionally, the wadi’s banks are home to four different villages all with welcoming locals who are ever ready to have tourists support their textile industry which is run by Omani Women. Diving into the deep freshwater pools in this beautiful valley is also a great way to refresh yourself and escape the prickly weather.
Wadi Ad Dayqah
Filled with water all year round, and housing the Sultanate’s largest dam that is 75m high, Wadi Ad Dayqah is one of the most accessible tourist wadis in Muscat. Highly popular among locals and tourists and exceptionally busy during the weekends, this wadi is a great place to take a dip in the water and also admire the magnificent dam which holds about 100 million cubic metres of rainwater and stretches eight kilometres across the wadi. Wadi ad Dayqah plays a great role in providing irrigation and protection to the neighbouring village. The construction of the dam has prevented flat floods which enhances the security of those living nearby. With around 120 wadis covering its path, Wadi Ad Dayqah happens to be one of Oman’s largest wadis.
