Risk of Asthma Attack Higher Among Youth

Young people are at a higher risk of having an asthma attack than any other age group living with the condition. The result of a study that polled more than 10,000 people with asthma, also found that young adults are twice as likely as people over 60 to need emergency care for their condition. According to the Asthma UK survey, there are a number of reasons why young adults may be getting worse asthma care, including complacency around the seriousness of asthma or an inability to get a GP appointment. More than a quarter of the young people in the survey said they did not attend their asthma review; more than one in 10 said that their GP surgery was too busy, so they were unable to book a review; and more than half said they did not receive a reminder that their review was due.

Food Additives Could Impact Gut Bacteria

Common food additives or emulsifiers could produce physiological and behavioural changes, including anxiety, says a new study. Emulsifiers are found in a wide range of foods, as manufacturers use it to alter the texture of the food and extend its shelf life. Earlier studies have shown that emulsifiers can alter the microbiome of mice, causing low-grade inflammation and increasing the risk of obesity and metabolic disorders. The study in humans concluded that gut bacteria can be directly impacted by commonly used food additives. Now, a recent research has found that emulsifiers might also have an impact on our mental wellbeing, as previous studies have shown that gut health and the health of gut bacteria have a substantial influence on mental wellbeing.
