Camera Inspired By Shrimps for Underwater Navigation

Camera with Shrimp Eyes

Underwater environment is set to become all the more vivid for explorers seeking to see it all through a camera that mimics the eyes of animals that inhabit the water. Researchers have developed an underwater GPS method by using polarisation information collected with a bio-inspired camera that is designed along the lines of mantis shrimp eyes. This camera, a variation of a polarisation imager named Mantis Cam, after the shrimp that inspired it, takes advantage of how light refracts, or bends, when it passes through the surface of water and bounces from particles and water molecules. It is expected to open new possibilities for undersea navigation and understanding of the migratory behaviour of marine animals.
