Whipped Coffee, more commonly known today as Dalgona Coffee, first gained online traction in South Korea in January when the popular actor Jung Il-woo tried it on a popular show. It was during the show that he claimed the drink reminded him of a South Korean honeycomb toffee confection called Dalgona, giving it its now famous name.
The treat itself however is nothing new. Dalgona Coffee has been well known all over the world for many years in several parts of the world albeit with different names such as Frappe in Greece, Beaten Coffee in India, Batido in South America etc.
However, soon after the show, the drink went viral in South Korea, with many coffee shops adding Dalgona Coffee to their menus. And it only grew more popular from there with numerous online influencers, especially on Instagram, posting about the treat online. Soon, it was popular the world over and has spawned many more new creations with several people tweaking the recipe to make their own creations, including everything from strawberry and Nutella to cookies.
The original recipe of Dalgona Coffee however is relatively simple and basically includes just four simple ingredients — coffee, water, sugar, and milk. Here is how you make it in five simple steps:
Step 1: Take one tablespoon of instant coffee, one tablespoon sugar and one tablespoon boiling water per person.
Step 2: Mix all three ingredients into a bowl.
Step 4: Whip the mixture with a whisk or hand mixer until the mixture turns from foamy to frothy to creamy.
Step 3: Pour your favourite milk, hot or cold, into a glass.
Step 5: Using a spoon place the whipped coffee mixture on top of the milk and then stir it through.
Yes, it really is that simple. You can even alter Dalgona Coffee further to your liking in several ways – use a smaller glass with less milk for a stronger drink or vice versa, replace the sugar with honey or other granulated sweeteners (you can’t make it sugar free unfortunately, as it won’t whisk quite as well without it), add in some vanilla extract or caramel syrup, etc. If you haven’t already, why not give the coffee or these alterations a try.
