Is it true? Do Men lose weight more quickly than women?

Yes, men do lose weight more quickly than women, say researchers, who attribute it to the way men’s bodies are built. What is more, men gain more health benefits from weight loss than women! The eight-week study, which put the participants on an 800-calorie diet, found that men lost 16 percent more weight than women, and men, as a group, had lower heart rate and less body fat; they had lower risk for diabetes in comparison to women. The low-calorie diet, in fact, had negative impact on women – they experienced larger reductions of good (HDL) cholesterol as well as reductions in bone mineral density. Their lean body mass also decreased, leading to slower metabolism and slow weight loss.

Poor sleep affects wound healing in type 2 diabetes

There is strong connection between poor sleep and wound healing in type 2 diabetes, note researchers, who opine that this connection could help pave the way for new treatment methods. Type 2 diabetes affects the body’s ability to produce insulin, which is the hormone that regulates blood sugar levels. And among all the complications that can arise from diabetes, ulcers that can form from wounds are the most serious; even small wounds that develop on feet can lead to ulcers. As many as 14 to 24 percent of the people who develop an ulcer with diabetes may have to get their lower limb amputated. A new study has now found that sleep fragmentation has an impact on wound healing. Sleep quality is said to affect the immune system and weaken the healing process.

Blue light from phone could damage eyes

That distinct blue light emitted by Smartphones, laptops and other handheld devices could have a toxic effect on eyes, say scientists who discovered how the  blue light emitted has a potential to lead to macular degeneration. Macular degeneration is the result of photoreceptor cell death in the retina. The photoreceptor cells capture visual images and signal them to the brain using a molecule called retinal. Retinal is triggered by blue light and may cause various chemical reactions within the eye, which can be poisonous to the photoreceptor cell molecules rendering them damaged. And when these photoreceptor cells die, they die; there is no regeneration.

Sleep deprivation can affect social life

According to a new study, people who are sleep-deprived display symptoms that are similar to people with social anxiety. Researchers found that sleep-deprived people felt lonelier and less social around other people. They were even rated lonely and less socially desirable by the panel of observers, who were well rested. Researchers opine that sleep deprivation impairs the drive for social interaction on many levels. A sleep deprived person may not have the required energy for social interaction. Rather, there is an overwhelming desire for sleep to take precedence over everything else.
