Up until a few years ago, Bandar Khayran was one of Oman’s best-kept secrets. Also spelt Bandar Al Khairan and Bandar Khiran, this holiday spot, draped lazily on the northeastern coast of Oman has quickly become a favourite among citizens and visitors alike.
Tucked between vast expanses of rocky mountains, Bandar Khayran is situated about 20 km from Qantab. Not too far away from the capital city of Muscat, it is the perfect spot for a day trip, picnic or even an overnight camping trip. The journey towards the location epitomises the saying, ‘It’s about the journey, not the destination.’ Long winding roads, lined on either side by jagged-edged mountains with colours changing as the sun rises and dips and clouds cast shadows, make for a scenic ride, while small valleys along the way reveal shimmery water, glistening in the light of the sun; views that beckon one towards Bandar Khayran.
Upon reaching the destination, visitors have the option of choosing between finding a secluded beach that they can enjoy some quiet at; diving into the clear waters for a relaxing swim, hiking through rocky mountains or snorkelling.
Though the main beach itself can be quite populated depending on the time and day of your visit, there are small motorboats available, with guides ready to whisk you away to a quieter beach tucked in between the dips and curves of the mountains. A good rule to follow is to put on your bargaining hat and try to get the price down, for boat rides do not come cheap! These almost private beaches are the perfect getaway from the humdrum of daily life. Just put down a beach blanket, lay down and enjoy the view. No distractions – apart from the occasional motorboat whir – and no cares. Only blue sea, blue skies and golden mountains as far as you can see. A great spot to get some sun, family fun and enjoy a good book while guzzling finger sandwiches and chilled lemonade.
Exploring on foot is also a great way to enjoy Bandar Khayran. The views are drop-dead gorgeous – rocky islands floating in turquoise waters amidst the quiet create a tranquil space and mood. However, while hiking or climbing, never go alone and always be attentive; the mountains are sandy and loose and can shift under your feet causing slips and falls.
Beneath the cerulean waters lies an ecosystem of beautiful coral reefs, home to several species of organisms and colourful marine life like reef fish, honeycomb morays, turtles and stingrays as well as tuna, lionfish, triggerfish, parrotfish, angelfish and lots more. The calm and shielded waters make for the perfect setting for snorkelling. The underwater treasures of this location are sure to enthral adventure seekers and seasoned snorkelers alike and have them coming back for more.
If one is planning a day trip, it is best to drive up to Bandar Khayran early in the morning as the sun comes up. This allows for time to laze in the sun, dip in the water for afternoon swims and enjoy the pleasant weather as it gets cooler as the day progresses. The sandy yet quiet banks of the bays are ideal for camping overnight. A word of caution here – if you do plan on camping at Bandar Khayran, make sure you have warm clothing as it does tend to get cold during the night and towards dawn.
What most people love about Bandar Khayran is that it is a serene and restful, clean and well-maintained spot just a few minutes outside Muscat. Yet, there are very vivid signs of the lack of care people exercise in the way of garbage strewn around and remnants of trips left on the spot. While the authorities do their bit to maintain our favourite weekend destinations for us, it is up to us to care for and treat these places with the utmost respect. When your trip draws to an end and you’re ready to head back, make sure to dispose of waste in the assigned garbage bins or carry it back with you to the city.
