Oh, we girls love our eyeliner, that too on fleek. What we would not give for a flawless, neatly styled flick of our eyeliner. The pandemic has made eyeliner even more important as there is a constant emphasis on having alluring eyes above the mask. Furthermore, many of the make-up eyeliner looks, like winged or cat, the Arabian all over, the smokey or smudged, besides the classic involve application of the eyeliner in a precise method.

For many, applying eyeliner can be intimidating but a steady hand and few tips and techniques along with a little practice will help you master using eyeliner with ease and get it on fleek. Follow these basic steps to get the technique right.

  1. First thoroughly cleanse your eye area with eye make-up remover to get rid of any trace of old eye products.
  2. Next, apply an eyeshadow primer on your eyelids to create a plain canvas and to make the eyeliner stick. This step also ensures that your eyeliner lasts longer.
  3. Position yourself in front of the mirror by placing your elbow on a flat surface to keep your hand steady, tilt your head back slightly and look down into the mirror. You can use the other hand to gently pull the eye taut if required.
  4. Mark three dots on the eyelid with your eyeliner, the first dot in the middle of your lash line as close to your eye as possible. This dot should be equal to the thickness of your desired line. The second dot should be in the inner corner of your eye where you want the line to begin and the third dot should be at the outermost point where you want the wing to end. Use the angle of your lower lash line as a guide.
  5. Now use small strokes of the eyeliner to connect the dots together along your lash line to fill in the eyeliner line. You may need to apply more pressure as you move towards the outer corner of the eye to make the line thicker. Fill in any gaps by dabbing the liner.
  6. Now repeat the process on your other eye making sure to match both eyes.

You may notice a few problems during or after applying the eyeliner. Read on to know how to resolve them and get it on fleek.

If you are a beginner with an unsteady hand leading to uneven lines, then it would be best to opt for a cream or gel eyeliner which can be applied with a stiff angled brush. Cream or gel eyeliner is easier to control and a stiff brush offers more precision.

If your problem is a smudged eyeliner, then the best way to fix the smudge is to wipe off excess product off the tip of the eyeliner with a tissue before you apply it. If you have oily eyelids, then set your eyeliner with a layer of translucent powder on top. And always wait for the eyeliner to dry before moving on to your next step.

Sometimes, it is easy to draw the line on your lid, but when the time comes to draw the winged part at the outer edge, you tend to get messy. Fix this problem by using anything with a straight edge, like tape or a credit card, to keep your wings nice and neat. Place the straight edge of the card or tape close to the bottom lash line of your eye so that it runs from the outer corner of your eye towards the end of your brow. Trace a straight line with a lighter eyeshadow or an eye pencil along the straight edge of the card and using this line as a guide just apply eyeliner against it.

Sometimes when you do not apply your eyeliner close enough to your lash line, you will be left with skin showing through a gap between the eyeliner and the lashes. If you do find a gap, just fill it in close to the lashes using a black eye pencil or shadow.

You can always clean up excess eyeliner, crooked lines, or any other mishaps using a cotton swab dipped in eye make-up remover and lightly wipe the problem eyeliner off for a flawless edge.

We sure hope that this play-by-play guide will help you with your eyeliner struggle and help you achieve that eyeliner look that is on a fleek.
