Launched in 2018 by Sayyida Hakima Al Said, ‘ HAK The Label’ beautifully fuses cultural symbolism with contemporary design. Finding inspiration from her international upbringing, in all of the many countries she has called home – Asia, the Middle East, South Africa and Europe – her work refines cultural symbolism from the varied environments, into a singular aesthetic.
“My design style is bold, minimal and delicate,” she maintains, as she traces her growth in the world of jewellery design in the following interview with FACES.
Could you trace your journey in the path of jewellery design? Who or what influenced you to become one?
Even though I have always had a love for jewellery, designing my own pieces kind of happened by accident! It was while I was working as a graphic designer for a London based jewellery brand that I became fascinated by the whole design and manufacturing process. So I then learned the ropes and understood what it means to design jewellery, and transitioned from graphic designer to jewellery designer. And after working with numerous designers over the years, I realised I had all of these ideas and decided to take it further and create my own brand.
Where do you draw your inspiration from?
From my travels and the different cultures I experience; also my family and friends.
What were the challenges you faced in starting HAK The Label?
It was a big learning curve in the beginning, and it still is now! Thankfully, because of my jewellery design background, I had an idea of what was expected and what needs to be done. Since I started my own line, a lot of time and effort goes into research and sourcing…more than you would expect. Jewellery manufacturing is very complicated, so it’s important to find the right suppliers and people to work with. There is still a lot of trial and error, and I am constantly being challenged; but I love the process!
Who are your major customers; rather, what kind of woman wears your jewellery?
My designs aren’t limited to one type of person. Its expression is free for all to wear and enjoy.
How big is the local jewellery market?
The jewellery market in the region has really transformed over the past few years. Women in this region are connoisseurs of fine jewellery and are extremely knowledgeable about diamonds, exquisite stones and pearls. But, in the past, they have only really bought from big international brands and stuck to the classic look.
It’s only in the past few years that young, local designers are starting brands with new jewellery designs – not just classic diamond styles, but unique designs that are modern and contemporary. Also, the trend in multiple/layered ear piercings is really taking off. This has definitely been influenced by the younger generation seeking newness; it’s very positive to see this change.
Personally, who is your favourite designer?
For me, there are way too many incredible designers to narrow down to just one! But, at the moment, I’m really loving Maria Tash because she is leading the piercing trend with really cool and unique designs.
What are the current trends in the market and what would you advise your potential clients?
Layered piercings and mismatched earrings – I’m a big fan of earrings! I’d advise my clients to look into layered piercings; you can be so creative with what you can do with this! If you are not so keen on committing to a new piercing, then you should try mismatching your earrings for a modern look.
Where are HAK The Label products available?
My jewellery is available for purchase on my website https://hakthelabel.com/ and soon at Dar Al Aseel Boutique in Muscat.
