New York Fashion Week SS 2020 Trends

- Advertisment -

Unlike most of the collections in Milan and Paris, New York Fashion Week offered some of the most accessible and wearable runway looks that we could easily integrate into our current wardrobe, observes Xenia Daf* Here are the top 7 trends that will surely end up in the wardrobes of all fashionistas this summer:

1) Collars

One of the cutest micro-trends making some noise on the Instagram right now is the vintage-inspired collar. On the New York Fashion Week (NYFW) they were presented by Tory Burch, Marc Jacobs, Chocheng, Proenza Schouler and many other brands. Contrast collars peeking out from under a sweater or vest, on dresses, shirts, tops or jackets are perfectly suited to those who like to make a statement without going too far.

2) 50/50

Designers echoed Cardi B’s song, ‘I can get ’em both, I don’t wanna choose’, with their creations, dividing their clothes exactly in half. So, Christopher John Rogers combined checks and stripes, while Sally LaPointe combined different colours. It’s definitely a trend that attracts curiosity and, perhaps, makes for a great conversation starter too.

3) Puff Sleeves

This trend keeps coming back and gets bigger and bigger every season. And no wonder why! It’s one of the most beautiful, feminine and flattering trends. The puff sleeves are really good at creating an illusion of slightly slimmer silhouette. And, despite it being a statement trend, it is surprisingly easy to wear – just pair it with something more edgy or casual to create a chic and sophisticated look.

4) Draping

Grecian goddesses reclaimed again their fashion throne at NYFW this season, as many designers sent dreamy, softly draped dresses floating down the runway. Whether it is mini dresses (like Oscar de la Renta), maxi (like on the Proenza Schouler and Sies Marjan shows), or drapes as an insert detail (like The Row), these garments will help you create a breezy, effortless style.

5) White Suits

New York is known for its love for tailoring, so the runways on the fashion week were filled to the brim with suits. And, out of all the varieties, white suits were declared the most desirable options. This is particularly relevant for the hot Middle East summer – the palette-cleansing white suit feels just like a breath of fresh air. Colours could vary from pearl silver, like Tom Ford, to cream-beige, like on the Marc Jacobs show.

6) Oversized Bags

Say buy-buy to impractical micro bags. Now it’s time for larger-than-life tote bags that could probably stow away a human. Seriously, the more XL, the better; throw your gym clothes, water bottle, and laptop in with some extra room to spare.

7) Polka Dot

Over the past few years, designers have so enthusiastically tailored a number of spotty creations every season that it’s time to transfer the polka dot print from the ‘trend’ category to the quite usual phenomenon on the catwalks. And, at the NYFW, it wasn’t just on dresses, but on suits and bags as well – like we saw at the Michael Kors Collection show.
