Onward & Upward: Millie Bobby Brown

15-year-old Millie Bobby Brown has enchanted the world with her bedazzling charm, her talent for personifying every role she plays and wisdom beyond her years

It’s no surprise that tabloids, entertainment bugles and online portals are hailing Millie Bobby Brown as queen; what with her uber-successful web television run and a promising career on the silver screen, there is nothing she cannot do!

Millie was born to British parents in Spain on February 19, 2004. She is the third of four children and was born with only partial hearing in one ear. A few years later, her family moved to Orlando, Florida to start an entrepreneurial venture; and it was then that Millie – only 8 years old at the time – caught the eye of a talent scout. Her parents decided to move the family out to Los Angeles to allow her the opportunities to realize her acting aspirations.

Shortly after she debuted as a guest star on the fantasy-drama TV series ‘Once Upon a Time in Wonderland’. Things were looking up. She scored a starring role in ‘Intruders’ and went on to make guest appearances on popular shows ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ and ‘Modern Family’.

As she kept finding herself cast in smaller roles, her family made the hard decision of moving back home to the UK. It was around this time that Millie really came into her own. She auditioned for Netflix’s ‘Stranger Things’ and was cast in her breakout role of Eleven / Jane Hopper, a gifted child with psychokinetic powers and telepathic abilities.

The series premiered on Netflix in 2016, and her portrayal of Eleven made Millie Bobby Brown a household name! She received critical acclaim and attained overnight stardom as the series opened to rave reviews, cruised through to the top of all watch lists and had viewers hooked all over the world.

In 2017, her performance earned her nominations for the People’s Choice Award for Favourite Sci-fi/Fantasy TV Actress, and the Screen Actors Guild Award for Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Drama Series. The same year, she won the MTV Movie & TV Award for Best Actor in a Show and Breakthrough Performer of the Year at the Gold Derby TV Awards. She was also nominated for Emmys in the Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series category in both 2017 and 2018.

While she continued to fight Demogorgons into the second season of ‘Stranger Things’, Millie used her platform to create awareness about children’s rights, lack of education and the impact of violence and bullying. In November 2018, she was appointed as the UNICEF’s youngest-ever Goodwill Ambassador. “It’s a huge honour to join such an impressive list of people who have supported UNICEF over the years. I am looking forward to meeting as many children and young people as I can, hearing their stories, and speaking out on their behalf,” she said on the occasion. In April 2018, she became the youngest person ever to be included in TIME magazine’s list of 100 Most Influential People in the World.

The year 2019 started off on an incredible note for Millie, as she made her feature film debut in ‘Godzilla: King of the Monsters’, and is slated to reprise her role in ‘Godzilla vs. Kong’. The third season of ‘Stranger Things’ released on July 4, 2019, and needless to say, had the world rapt, as Millie’s Eleven, flanked by her posse, fought a monster bigger than they’ve ever braved before.
