Gifting is a part of our culture, states Laila Al Amri, the brain behind the Partybox, a popular Instagram account that has opened up avenues for those seeking personalised gift options. In the following interview, she presents her take on the gifting industry, with the focus on partybox_om, which has crafted its gifts portfolio to meet the needs of the market with a variety of gifts and presentation options for a host of occasions.
What inspired you to start ‘Partybox’?
I had a passion for gift wrapping and gift arranging since I was young. However, what triggered it was the difficulty I constantly faced in finding a unique gift in the local market – one that matched my need and taste for certain brands and one that was arranged in a neat package. Thus, I decided to start the Partybox business. At partybox_om, the gifts are unique as the items included are from different brands; a lot of them are not available locally.
How would you describe the gifting scene in Oman?
It’s a very lucrative market, but there is still a big room for growth. I have also noticed that there are two types of customers: ones that are looking for quality and value in what they are buying, and ones that only shop for the lowest prices. Interestingly, most of the gifts that customers opt for are for ladies and for babies.
Would you say things are changing in the local gifts market?
Yes, I feel that more people are looking for uniqueness in what they give, especially when they are giving it to special ones in their lives. What I also noticed is that due to the hectic pace of life, people prefer to get something special and unique prepared for them and delivered to their location in one package, rather than going around to try to find the components of the gift themselves, and thereby wasting their time. People want to have unique and special items that you don’t normally get in the mass market.
Are people accustomed to buying gifts?
Of course, it’s part of our culture, as people normally like to give something on certain occasions – such as when they are visiting someone, on birthdays, on mother days and other special occasions.
What are the ideal gifts for different occasions and for different ages?
I have specific gifts that cater to various age groups. For example, while I have unique items for college and university graduates, for babies and kids I have special items such as toys that are suitable for them. And for adults, the most suitable gifts would contain items such as perfumes, body lotions and makeup, and so on.
What would you suggest for the festive season?
It depends on the occasion and the taste and budget of the customer; but generally, it would be items such as imported chocolate bars, imported hot chocolate, a range of imported teas with different flavours, etc.
What are the most challenging aspects of being in the business of gifts?
The most challenging aspect of the business is constantly coming up with newer and unique ideas and items. Besides, finding unique brands that are not available locally is a major concern.
