Effect of surroundings on your taste

Taste is not just related to the olfactory sense but to all other sensory inputs, as a new research has found that it is influenced also by the surroundings. According to the study, what we taste when we eat is significantly influenced by where we are when we have our meals. Researchers used virtual reality settings to assess the influence of the surrounding on the taste factor. Through virtual reality headsets, about 50 of the participants in the experiment experienced three different environments – a sensory booth, a park bench, and a cow barn – while eating a sample of blue cheese. When asked to rate, the cheese eaten in the cow barn setting was rated as more pungent than other settings.

Sunshine in the house could kill dust-dwelling bacteria

Letting sunlight into the house through windows could kill bacteria that live in dust, says a study. Researchers found that 12 percent of bacteria, on average, were alive and able to reproduce in dark rooms, while only 6.8 percent of bacteria exposed to daylight and 6.1 percent of bacteria exposed to UV light were viable. Dust kept in the dark contained organisms closely related to species associated with respiratory diseases, which were largely absent in dust exposed to daylight. The study resonates with ancestral wisdom that daylight has the potential to kill microbes on dust particles.
