The past few months have seen the world come to terms with the Covid-19 pandemic, and yet in its midst, the common cold has been affecting people everywhere owing to the changing weather. While you absolutely must seek medical attention should you be experiencing symptoms of a cold and flu, here are a few remedies from spices you could turn to in order to soothe yourself while recovering…
Turmeric
It’s no surprise that the Golden Latte has gained popularity worldwide – the ingredient that makes it golden, turmeric contains curcumin which gives the spice its anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidant properties. Used a lot in Indian cooking, this medicinal herb is used in home remedy concoctions and is said to enhance the body’s immunity and heart and liver health. To make a golden latte at home, bring a cup of milk of your choice, a teaspoon of turmeric powder, a pinch of cinnamon and a teaspoon of maple syrup/honey (optional) to a bubbling boil and drink it hot.
Ginger
A great way to fight colds and chills is by incorporating ginger into your daily intake. It helps clear phlegm and mucus and helps facilitate improved circulation which keeps chills at bay and helps the body get rid of toxins. To soothe a sore throat instantly, mix a tablespoon of honey with half teaspoon of ground ginger and consume it, slowly letting it slip down your throat. Do not wash it down with any drink as it will counteract the desired effect. One of the best spices for cold!
Cloves
A truly power-packed spice, cloves have anti-bacterial, anti-fungal and anti-septic properties. They especially come in handy to sooth cold, cough and sinusitis. Apart from chewing on whole cloves, they can even be mixed into a hot cup of water in the morning, added to your morning tea or you can make gingerbread milk by bringing a cup of milk, pinches of ground cinnamon, clove, ginger and nutmeg, a teaspoon of brown sugar, and half teaspoon of molasses to a boil. Clove oil can also be used to clear the nasal passage.
