The Fifth Direction: Towards A Brighter Future

‘The Fifth Direction’, an Omani crew of young social workers is on a mission – to steer the youth of Oman towards a responsible future by equipping them with life and leadership skills which will help them sail through life’s troubles and triumphs

Started by Coach Said Al Harthy and Coach Abdulaziz Al Hadrami, The Fifth Direction was set up in 2018, but the seeds of change had been sown long before. It has been an 11-year long journey of volunteering and training youth, locally and internationally. All paths led the duo to collaborate with Coach Adnan Al Balushi, Coach Mohammed Al Farsi and Coach Basim Al Maharbi, to come together to form The Fifth Direction, youth development and leadership initiative that organises training workshops for teens and youth to instil in them self-confidence and reliability.

The initiative is based on a beautiful concept – the planet follows a four-direction system, based on which all locations are determined. The fifth direction is the path one chooses for oneself. So, the crew has made it their job to help the youth of Oman determine their own directions by implementing four essential principles – self-confidence, leadership, responsibility and creative thinking. The team believes that the path to success begins with self-confidence, followed by the need to lead oneself first, and then others, in order to reach one’s destination. The third principle – responsibility towards the self, family and environment – is essential at every step; and finally, creative thinking to help turn dreams into reality.

The crew has organised several workshops for the youth in Muscat, with up to 100 participants at a time; the programmes held in Jebel Akhdar and Jebel Shams were designed to train up to 50 participants. Recently, they held a camping programme in Salalah from 20-25 July, 2019, which included tourism, development workshops, life skills training and sports activities. The group has also organised family programmes, with workshops for both parents and children to facilitate better interaction within the family.

The Fifth Direction, in line with their goal to upskill 100,000 youth by 2030, has collaborated with the Ministry of Higher Education to hold workshops for college students; it has worked with Middle East College to organise a training workshop; and conducted a volunteering run with the Neda Al Khair team, inviting previous participants to distribute Iftar during Ramadan.
