A visit to Al Mouj always feels like travelling to a completely different world – the well-maintained surroundings, the buzzing streets, a wide range of restaurants teeming with patrons even on weekdays and the gorgeous marina, by which people of all ages unite to have a good time. On this Tuesday afternoon, we were at Al Mouj Muscat with one mission – to savour all of HuQQa’s delicious grub.
Situated in Marsa Plaza in the heart of Al Mouj Muscat, the town square where everyone comes to enjoy leisure activities and mingle, HuQQa poses a posh exterior. A complete glass structure, accented with unique cement cutwork overlays that play a dazzling game of light and shadow all day, one look at the place is enough to beckon you in. The interiors are modern and edgy; matte black sets the tone while hints of gold present in the light fixtures pop. As you enter, the first thing you notice is the large central bar, kitted out with advanced tech that helps them serve up signature non-alcoholic drinks, coffees and teas. The large panels of glass diffuse light into the space during the day, while the dim lighting creates a cosy, elite vibe at night.
While browsing through the menu, it is evident that the team behind HuQQa Muscat has shown great dedication in studying the local market. Presented electronically on a tablet, the menu has an extensive selection of wholesome breakfast options, small plates, burgers, mains, desserts and their signature drinks. Not only do they have on offer traditional Turkish cuisine, they have also included favourites from different cuisines, borrowing influence from Indian curries, Asian meals, Italian staples, Mexican dishes and all things popular. The menus include pictures and videos for diners to view and get a deeper understanding of what they are ordering.
Presentation is key at HuQQa Muscat. Every plate is created with so much love, every element placed delicately. The drinks are served in fancy glasses and each one features a play of colours and flavours, with super fun names that have you intrigued instantly.
Having been seated on the deck overlooking the marina, we were excited for all that was in store for us. Our drinks arrived first – the Bird Nest, Boomerang and Bath Tub. All quirky names for some really splendid quenchers. The Bird Nest was a zesty mix of pineapple, mango, cherry juice and lime and came served in a cane nest with a white chocolate bird sitting on it. Served in a tiny bath tub frothing with foam, the Bath Tub was a blend of strawberry, mango, vanilla powder and foam – an Instagram worthy drink, indeed. But our favourite among all was the Boomerang; a bright and sunny drink complete with the goodness of passion fruit, sweet syrup, mint and soda – citrusy and punchy, just the way we like our afternoon refreshments!
Next came the appetizers. We had the fresh and colourful Goat Cheese Salad – a mix of golden fried goat cheese, strawberries, orange, walnuts and cherry tomatoes on a bed of greens. The greens were crunchy, while the tomato, orange and strawberries brought splashes of sweetness and tanginess. The star of course was the goat cheese, crackling on the outside and soft on the inside. So delicious! The Dynamite Chicken was yummy and will definitely be a crowd pleaser; and the Quesadilla Vegetariano was cheesy and flavourful with mushroom, bell peppers and jalapeno, served with guacamole and hot salsa.
For our mains we had the Risotto Al Funghi Porcini and the Meatball Bursa. Creamy and textured, the Risotto Al Funghi Porcini was to die for. Every bite oozed with the goodness of the rich cheesy mushroom sauce; warm, full-bodied and hearty – just perfect for the chilly afternoon. The fresh basil garnish was a nice touch and helped cut through the richness of the dish. The Meatball Bursa was a whole and hearty Turkish delicacy; succulent grilled meatballs tossed with toasted pita bread in a tangy tomato sauce and served with yogurt. The spice, tanginess, and meatiness were so well balanced, while the crunch of the bread was a nice surprise. The side of yogurt was the perfect accompaniment. We simply could not get enough!
Then came dessert – the Izmir Bomb. Three Izmir Bomba Balls stuffed with ooey-gooey Nutella! The outer coating of the bomba balls were thick and crispy, while the insides oozed Nutella. Rich and chocolatey, this dessert would definitely be a chocoholic’s favourite!
