The weather is turning and we’re excited. Winter is coming, and that means bringing out all those carefully wrapped sweaters and jackets, dusting off fuzzy slippers and smoothing lint off of fluffy blankets. While the function of fashion during this part of the year is to keep the wearer warm and comfortable throughout the day, we don’t think it’s advisable to forget the form of fashion and how it all comes together.
So, here are a few tips to hone in your style and keep the fashion conversation flowing all through the winter months…
Layers for the Win
We recommend layering up all year round, even in summer, with a light t-shirt worn under a breeze casual shirt. But layering up during the winter is necessary to keep you toasty and we’re going to tell you how to do it the right way. Keep in mind that the maximum number of layers you should keep to is three. Opt for a neutral shirt, a solid toned sweater and complete the look with a stylish jacket and you’re good to go.
Fabric Watch
Picking clothes in the right fabric is a huge part of A/W fashion. Go for knitwear which has plenty of texture that will add interest to your attire. When wearing formals opt for wool suits and jackets, and for casuals, pick overcoats and jackets that have a soft fleece inner-lining. Mix and match textured fabrics to create a more pronounced layered look.
Solid Tones
The easiest way to ensure you are dressed to impress during the winter months is to opt for solid coloured trousers, shirts, tees and overcoats. It’s best to stick to the rule of three here too; pick two or three hues that best complement each other to keep the look clean, crisp and neat.
Pop Appeal
Winter fashion usually comes in darker shades or earthy tones, so it’s easy to blend in with the crowd. A great way to customise your style and stand out is to add a little pop to your ensemble; this could be a brightly hued piece of clothing, or a fun accessory like a hat, bow-tie, belt or a scarf. Not only will this help be a break the monotony of dark shades, it will also instantly turns heads!
Brown Footwear
Colours ranging from tan, to rust, chocolate and burgundy are all such great options for footwear during the cold months. While the days may be dark and gloomy, a rich, brown-hued pair of dress shoes, sneakers or boots will just about complete any look, no matter what the vibe!
Patterns To The Rescue
You’re probably missing all the checks, dots and paisleys from summer and we can relate. While it is most fashionable to stick to solid tones, every once in a while it’s nice to break the rules and wear something patterned. Make way for woven patterned fabrics, or knits with little patterned details that are oh-so-playful! Patterns work particularly well in casual autumn/winter wear, but if you must include patterns in your formal wear, do it with a subtle hand – maybe a striped pocket square, a paisley tie, or polka dotted bowtie.
