It’s not ‘just a family affair’ for the generation of businesswomen who have long broken the shackles of stereotypes to helm family businesses that play pivotal roles in the nation’s economic development.

Women Who Mean Business

As March sheds its Women’s Day garb to take a pot shot at April and the Fool’s Day pegged on to the first, we at FACES take a spirited walk down the business road to find inspiration from women who are in business and manage large family conglomerates. While their progression into family business may seem to be a natural flow of events, the crux of the issue is that these women have taken on the mantle of responsibility with aplomb, playing a pivotal role in the successes of their business. We celebrate women all through this issue, as we pack the pages with stories that reflect her various moods and hues.

Women may be under-represented in the top management cadre of major companies, but their numbers are more than average in family businesses that have effectively established their global presence, Also despite the overwhelming belief that men make good bosses, studies have shown that women excel at taking initiatives and driving results of the companies they lead.

And with April 1 setting a light-hearted tone to the month, we present Oman’s own brand of comedians who operate under the banner of Oman Comedy Central. Their quips and innuendos will colour the month with a riot of laughter, while the climbing adventures of Read Macadam will set the adrenaline rolling. His ‘Valley of Giants: A Bouldering Odyssey in the Sultanate of Oman’ is a must-watch for all outdoor enthusiasts.

Our spotlight is on the National Museum of Oman, which is all set to open doors shortly and create a new landmark for tourists and visitors. Monique Borlée, who has turned her passion for diving into a tourism venture, talks about her life in Oman and her love for the sea.
