Although ‘hygge’ (pronounced ‘hoo-ga’ or ‘hue-gah’) devotees insist it is a state of mind rather than the décor and design elements that adorn your living spaces, hygge can be fostered with some tried and tested methods demonstrated by experts in the world of home décor. It is, understandably, a simple concept that has its core the basic premise of home as a cosy den; one that gives it a much wider connotation and which could be interpreted in myriad ways.
Like a cosy dinner with friends around the dining table with soothing music playing in the background and camaraderie floating around with laughter and even discussions about topics of interest.
There are, however, little dos and don’ts that will help create the ambience to evoke the inherent mood of ‘hygge’ in your home. Here are a few tips to help you get there:
Candle Glow
Flickering light from a candle wick can speak in languages that need no translation. There is instant warmth there. Even when the soft luminous glow is restricted to the corner where the candle is lit, it can kindle a sense of oneness that can envelope the entire room. Aroma candles that produce your favourite scents can enhance the mood further.
Lamp Light
Lamps, like candles, have their own charm. Place it in strategic places around the room to create a soft hygge atmosphere. Reading under the glow of a lamp is a beautiful expression of this concept. Place a lamp above your dining table as well, to create a circle of love that the table can inspire when all family members gather together for dinner.
Accessory Talk
Read that as suitable accessories… For, not all accessories have that element of hygge in them. And that means no plastics, rather restrained amount of plastic accessories. Natural is the flavour of hygge, and finding décor accessories that are leaning towards organic look are apt – like soft rugs in tonal colours.
Music Note
Soothing music is a beautiful expression of cosiness in your living space. But the idea should be to create a piped music effect, with no obvious signs of speakers and electronic gadgets. According to hygge principles, electronics, with their rigid appearance, can dampen the effect.
Texture Touch
The texture of your room is all the more important in staying focused with your hygge task. In hygge, texture is synonymous with soft surfaces that have an inherent feel of cosiness and warmth. Add cushions with soft covers or even knit ones, alongside throw rugs that have a fluffy look about them.
Minimal Look
Less is always more in the world of hygge. Filling your home with too many décor elements and artefacts can make it look cluttered and take away the mood you were planning on creating. Depending on the size of the room, pick and chose items that create oneness with you; remember, the size of your furniture also matters. The idea is to give your room an everything-fits-in feel; not to overindulge or impress your guests.
Clutter-Free
In every home décor concept, the one big ‘no’ is clutter. It is the basis of creating a stress-free home. Clutter can give negative vibes to the surroundings and spread it to the residents of the home. The best way to create an easy solution to things that are essential in the house and yet make them inconspicuous is to create hidden storage spaces that can hold those items.
Snug Nook
Whether you live in a villa or an apartment, ensure that your home has at least one cosy space that you can call your favourite. Windows that can be modified as seats are the best to get some nature therapy into the home. When padded with cushions, that spot can scream hygge like nothing else can.
Memory Zone
Displaying all the treasured memories, whether captured in photographs, souvenirs or paintings, has all the right notes of hygge packed in them. You could use the treasures to adorn your wall or a mounted bracket and let it envelope you and your family in shared togetherness that can only translate as happiness. Find creative ways to display the memories and add your own touch to the room.
Hygge, in its basic form, is the art of creating a sense of intimacy in a given moment. It could be in an act of drinking your morning cuppa with the morning sun reflecting on the walls, reading a book in a cosy corner, watching your favourite television show with family or simply soaking in a long tub bath with aroma candles for company.
